academic shoot reflection and critique

  1.  It was difficult for me to really concentrate on making the photos look good because I was really worried that I would disrupt the classes I was in.
  2. For some reason I had a really difficult time focusing the camera, I don't know why, it was just more difficult than it normally is. But then I realized the camera wasn't on auto focus and I turned it on and everything was good.
  3. If I could do this again, I would just focus more on making the pictures look cooler, like trying different angles and stuff like that.
  4. I think I did a good job of applying the rules of photography to the photos, so I probably wouldn't change that.
  5. For our next prompt, I feel like rule of thirds will be the easiest to do because it can really apply to anything we would be taking pictures of.
  6. I think the hardest rule to capture is lines because lines aren't everywhere so you have to really look for them.
  7. I'm still a little shaky on mergers and what specifically constitutes one, so I can just look on the power point again or ask some people.

peer critique

http://briannasphotojournalismblog.blogspot.com
  • I liked the simplicity of the photos and how she made good use of the light
  • I feel like the subject was a little unclear in some of the photos and maybe she could've played around with the angles to make the photos a bit more interesting

aperture, shutter speed, iso

aperture- f2.8

aperture- f16

  1. the part of the body most closely related to aperture is the pupil they both get bigger or smaller to take in light
  2. the smaller the aperture the bigger the f stop, the higher the aperture the smaller the f stop
  3. a higher f stop makes the background and foreground more clear whereas a low f stop blurs out most everything except the subject
shutter speed-
high shutter speed

low shutter speed

  1. in the light : A.) low shutter speed B.) low shutter speed C.) high shutter speed D.) low shutter speed E.) high shutter speed F.) high shutter speed   in the dark:  A.) high shutter speed B.) high shutter speed C.) slow shutter speed D.) high shutter speed E.) high shutter speed F.) slow shutter speed
  2. there are 3 setting regarding shutter speed, aperture priority which lets you set the aperture and automatically does shutter speed for you, shutter priority which does the exact opposite it lets you set shutter speed and takes care of aperture for you, and manual which lets you set both
iso-

iso 200

iso 3200

  1. some advantages would be not having to use the flash in a darker area and the photos are taken quicker
  2. the author suggested to use low iso as much as you can until its not possible anymore and when there is lots of light
  3. he said you should use high iso when there is no enough light to capture good images fast

  • aperture settings: you can adjust the f stop and change the
  • shutter speeds:  you can change the shutter speeds
  • you can go from very low iso to very high iso

great black and white photographers part 2

Berenice Abbott

Berenice was an american photographer who hailed from springfield, Ohio. She was born on july 17, 1898 and died on december 9, 1991 in Maine. Abbott studied very briefly at Ohio state university, then moved to new york and was an artist there, she was an artist in berlin for a time and then became an assistant to an artist in paris. After that she opened her own photography studio in paris where she took portraits. Her friend died and she spent some time reconstructing his photos to promote his work. then she went back to new york and was interested by the rapid urbanization and documented it, greatly inspired by her friend, she was known as the photographer of new york city. Through the 40s and 50s she taught photography and played around with her style of photography. She wrote about six books all on the subject of photography and lived in new york peacefully until she decided to move Maine for a quieter life.

photo manipulation and ethics

  1. the main points of the article were that manipulating photos has always been happening, the question is whether the photoshop effects effects the ethicacy of the photo or whether it is changed so much that it is lying to the viewers
  2. big publications have strict guide lines when it comes to photoshop and they make the journalist turn i proof that the photos meet those guide lines
  3. i think that line is really unclear of what is ethical and what is unethical but in my opinion i think if you change the lighting or up the contrast a little, stuff like that, it doesn't matter. the only time i think it would be unethical is if they were selling some sort of product and the product was altered
  4. i think this is really bad because its just a copy and paste and Oprah is beautiful so i have no idea why they felt they needed to do this. it just feels like this took it too far and it was unnessary
  5.  i honestly don't understand why they made such a big deal abut this one. all they did was squeeze it together to make it fit, the picture was not changed significantly.

academic shoot

lines-

  • the composition rule i followed for this photo was lines.
  • the subject of this photo is girl siting in the hallway.
  • i think its clear that the subject is the girl, all the lines kinda point to her.
  • i guess i could have shot her from the front so that the big window was behind me and not so much light was in the background.

balance-

  • the composition rule i followed for this picture was balance.
  • the subjects of this photo is the two boys worrying notes
  • i think the subject is clear, your eyes go to the boys when you look at the photo
  • i think the subject was clearly shown

rule of thirds-

  • the composition rule for this photo was rule of thirds
  • the subject of this photo is the boy drawing in the hallway
  • yes, i think the subject is pretty clear the only thing i think distracts from the boy is the big red wall
  • to make the subject clearer i could've found an angle that didn't make the big bright red wall so prominent

simplicity-

  • the composition rule was simplicity
  • the subject of this photo is the boy raising his hand
  • kind of, i think the big hand in the corner distracts from the boy
  • i could've moved so i was facing the boy more, but i was trying to not be a distraction and i was too focused on getting the simple green background

framing-

  • this photo shows the rule of framing
  • the subject is the boy doing his homework sitting at the desk
  • i think the subject is pretty clear, i meanness a little out of focus but other than that id say it was  fine
  • i could have put him more in focus, i was trying my darndess but it just didn't work out

merger-

  • this picture is a merger which is a thing you're not supposed to do
  • the subjects are those two girls hot gluing something
  • well one of the girls heads are kinda mushed together so it looks kinda weird
  • i could've good in front of them so that they would look like two separate people and not one whole person with two heads

academic shoot preview

the story-
this photo tells a story visually by the way it looks you can tell that the kids on the right are feeding the people on the left who are homeless, it was probably a school volunteer trip.

action and emotion-
there is a lot of action in this photo, the water looks like it erupted or something and the girls seem happy and surprised

filling the frame-
snide the frame of the picture is two people who appear to be welding something but the smoke looks very intriguing, it almost looks like fairy dust or something, it just looks very magical

my favorite photo was this one called "junior year" it was shot from above of a guy sitting down on the library floor surrounded by SAT prep books, he looked very stressed

  1. i just thought that photo was clever and they perfectly encapsulated what any person would think junior year looked like
  2. the picture shows simplicity, it is a black and grey photo so thee is no color distractions, it is also taken from above so the floor provides a blank background, and you can see the subject very clearly

  1. you could take photos in the classrooms, in the library pretty much anywhere where academia is.
  2. i could probably visit mr. dammann he's pretty chill and he's a science teacher so something interesting is bound to happen
  3. to get good photos, i think you just have to find something that people would want to look at so, as the photographer, find the things people wanna see

post shoot reflection

  1. challenges i faced during this first prompt shoot were that i was very focused on trying to find things to fit the prompt so i probably didn't think about how i was taking the picture as much as i should have, also the time scared me a bit so i might have been rushing.
  2. i was just very concerned with wether the photos would be in focus or not, so i was constantly moving the lens to focus it and it mostly worked out in my favor.
  3. if i could redo the assignment i would probably try and frame my photos better and think more about the shadows to try and create lines.
  4. i think i would keep the angles that i had i thought that they weren't bad.
  5.
  6. i am not really interesting in taking those same prompts again, just because i would like to do something different and take pictures of other things
http://carolinerittersphotojournalismblog.blogspot.com/2016/09/prompt-shoot-1.html
  1.  i really liked her metal picture i thought it was very well taken and just cool to look at, i also like the way she incorporated the basic photography skills
  2. i guess a thing i didn't like about the photos were some of them the backgrounds were a little busy

simplicity

simplicity-
this picture shows simplicity because the background is simple and there is a clear subject

avoid mergers

merger-
in this picture president bush's head is merged with the background and the other man's head also the kids are cut off at kind of weird places

lines

lines
in this photo all the lines lead to the subject which is the giant hole in the building

rule of three

rule of thirds-
the flags are placed just off center so your eyes are drawn to them

balance

balance-
this photo shows balance by having the towers be balanced out by the Brooklyn bridge in the foreground of the picture

framing

framing-
this picture shows framing because the subject, which would be the fireman, is framed by the shadows in the foreground

prompt shoot #1

metal
this photo could show lines, the lines of the bricks are leading to the very first bike

happy
this photo accomplishes balance because the flowers in the foreground balance out with her

square
this photo would represent simplicity, it has a clear subject that is red and a plain background, i guess it could also be rule of thirds

bowie
i don't think this photo really accomplishes anything it doesn't really look that great

the camera

  1. camera obscura is when there is a tiny hole in the wall in a dark room and the image is projected through the hole and seen upside down on the opposite wall
  2. the modern camera took a step forward in the 17th century because isaac newton and christian huygens perfected the understanding of optics and the process of making high quality lenses
  3. a glass lens, a dark box, and film were the parts of the first portable camera
  4. the cameras of then and the cameras of now still have the same basic function, to take pictures as light passes through the lens
  5. digital cameras use memory cards as opposed to regular film
  6. auto mode and program mode are the default modes of modern day cameras they are the same
  7. the portrait mode blurs outs the background by using the fastest lens setting
  8. the sports mode is used to freeze motion by using the fastest shutter speed possible
  9. a half press helps with faster camera response time more control over focus and encourages better composition
  10. this symbol means no flash at all, you would use it when the picture does not require flash
