architecture preview assignment 1

the national museum of play- USA

  • the strong national museum of play was built in rochester new york by an CJ architects
  • 1969
  • rochester new york
  • you can visit it
  • i could not find anything on how much it costed to build
  • the building was initially created to house the founders collections
  • i thought this building looked really fun. i chose it because maybe one day it would be cool to visit it and see what its like in real life. inside the building seems just as fun as the outside too. which i think is pretty cool that they were able to do that.
kansas city public library- kansas

  • kansas city public library was built by brian m finn
  • it was first established in 1873 but has moved and changed countless times
  • in the library district
  • you can visit it
  • the oringinal costed about 10 grand but of course all the rebuilds cost much more
  • the building was made to store books in and be a library it has a very long history leading up to where it is today
  • I think this building is so unique. there is no other building that looks quite like it. i feel like when people pass it on the street they can't help but smile.
ufo house- taiwan

  • the ufo houses were built by matti suuronen
  • the project was started in 1978
  • it is a private location you cannot visit normally
  • the cost of the ufo houses was probably a sizable amount
  • the buildinds were made as a vacation resort mostly for soliders but failed due to lack of funding
  • I chose this because ive actually heard of them before and know a little bit about them. and i think its cool that they were kinda fruturistic but also frozen in time. all the pictures of this place are also pretty cool to look at.
scupltured house- usa

  • charles dean built the sculpture house
  • in 1963
  • i believe the house is owned privatley so i dont think you can visit it
  • the house was bought for about 2.8 million dollars
  • the house was built only half way until it was used in a movie for which they finished it
  • I chose this house because it kinda reminds me of a mushroom house, like from the smurfs, but way fancier. its just really cool to look at and i think its cool they shot a movie there. and i like the story behind it i think its interesting.
turning torso- sweden

  • santiago calatrava built it
  • in 2001
  • yes you can visit it
  • it costed about 220 million dollars to build
  • it is the tallest building in scandinavia and the first twisted building in the world
  • I chose this structure because it is really unique. It was also the first of its kind which has to count for something. its also really interesting how they built it layer by layer

warm up

  1. I think this statement is fairly accurate and it makes a lot of sense. I agree with it to an extent but I feel like people will always identify with the setting their in by landmarks and that sort of thing.  Like when you think of spain you don't think of olive oil you think of the architecture and stuff like that. I like the way he uses his photos to share some messsage he believes in. I think thats cool about photography.
  2. Yeah,  I think itd be cool to see it with my own eyes and through my own perspective.
  3. I think it would be pretty cool, I mean I guess you would get kinda desentitized to all the excitment of the toys but you would always have stuff to play with.
  4. My favorite photo was of this family in their shop they were surrounded by dollheads which was a little creepy, but the little boys face was just full of pure joy and that was cool.
